A recumbent bike is different from a standard bicycle and both are different from an elliptical, especially because of the position you adopt when using them. On an elliptical bike, you're standing. In a standard, you sit upright or stand on the pedals. The recumbent has a backrest that serves as support for the column. Sitting and near the ground makes these bikes "beneficial for people suffering from back pain or balance problems," said Kathy Dieringer, board member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and president of D & D Sports Med in Denton, Texas. "It is not possible that you fall while being in it". Riding a recumbent bike could also strengthen the hamstring muscles more effectively than a vertical bicycle. In a 2014 study , researchers discovered that novice cyclists activated their hamstrings with greater force while pedaling a recumbent than they did on a standard stationary bicycle.
